 About Me

 Hi my name is Di

I live in a Rural town 3 hours south of Perth, in Western Australia with my very supportive family.

I first learned to sew by watching my mom when I was very young. Her sewing machine was off limits as she sewed a lot of wedding dresses but I used to sneak onto her machine when her back was turned and without switching on the electricity turn the fly wheel and sew all my dolls clothes, I believe she knew but never said anything about it….This is where my love of sewing began… I have always loved getting my hands dirty and have tried a lot of art forms, from pottery, painting, sewing clothing, quilting and embroidery in all its various forms. All of which I taught myself due to being left in the back of beyond. I now know it was all just a stepping stone to doll making.

I fell in love with dolls when I first started my job 10 years ago. I went to a craft show and saw all the fantastic creations that some of the Australian Artists were making and it made my heart flip. It took me a further 4 years before I gave up my job to dedicate my time (or what was left after family) to the wonderful world of cloth dolls. I am pretty much self-taught; most of what I have learned is from talking to people and lots of reading and lots of trial and error. and the odd workshop when I could find or organize one.

Living in a rural setting is wonderful when raising children but when it comes to doll making you are pretty limited to patterns and accessories and a lot of improvisation comes into it. I made several dolls from patterns by my favourite designers but I wanted to learn everything I could about cloth doll making and it all had to happen yesterday. Eventually I started playing around with my own designs to explore the ideas that were forming every time I saw something that inspired me. I love the way you can take a piece of cloth and create a 3 dimensional art piece with it… “Wow! … I did that?” it’s a feeling you can hardly describe.

I have been fortunate to meet some very talented women in the last couple of years who have continued to inspire and share their love of this wonderfully fulfilling art form and to them a heartfelt “Thank you” without your love and support I would still be stagnating and wondering what to do next.

I have been fortunate to have a doll included in Patti Culea's third book "Creative Cloth Doll Couture"
(you will find this Publication in the Books section of this website). This was such an awesome experience and has opened my eyes to new ideas. Thank you Patti for this wonderful opportunity.
